A quick comment before the series begins to air tonight. In 2010 I reached out to Fred Murray and let him know I was planning to write a book about his daughter's disappearance. He wouldn't answer direct calls but he passed a message through his in-law that he didn't want to answer questions. I found that odd, as I had written about a number of unsolved disappearances and murders and the families had always been gracious for coverage. This attitude made more sense when I learned that Maura had gotten in trouble for credit card and identity theft and was about to be kicked out of West Point when she withdrew. This was why Fred didn't want to talk but since that info has come out there's nothing to lose and he's been more forthcoming. There were other things I was told about Fred that made me upset but I chose not to air everyone's dirty laundry. I feel for Julie and Kurt especially. To have to read all the vile comments online must be spiritually trying at times.
This case is going to get a lot of attention again. I put myself out there and expect to take a few hits in this show. At the end of the day though I would love for them to have some closure and if all this happened to get us to that end then I have no regrets.
For the record I believe Maura was traveling in tandem with another driver that night. The other driver then either helped her move on or they are responsible for her murder.
You can read through my investigation of the case at my blog, http://mauramurray.blogspot.com And you can visit the Kent State Special Collections archive if you'd like to see every interview and document I collected and use it to form your own conclusion.
I wish the Murray family luck in finding Maura.
Peace.
