Erinn Larkin Interviews Fred Murray

This is a new interview with Fred Murray, by blogger Erinn Larkin. Anyone interested in the case should listen to it.

** A Personal Note **

This is a difficult link for me to post to. Erinn Larkin has contacted me for years. She was on the track team at UMass with Kate Markopoulos and she has taken an interest in the case for some time. We've been at odds off and on for some time, and most of her blog and her podcasts are based on picking apart my research. I got to meet her personally at CrimeCon. We shared a couple drinks at the bar around the corner and spent most of the time talking about our hero, Bernie Sanders, who she worked for in the last election. We left on good terms but that quickly degraded (don't ask me why, I couldn't say for sure) to the point I had to ask her to stop contacting me.

A couple weeks ago Erinn let me know she had spoken to Fred, and the nature of their conversation. Her interview does some really great things, and some not so great things. She and Fred commit libel - she once again says I am the single source of unsavory allegations against Fred. She and Fred know this is not true. Allegations began many years ago on the family forum before it was shut down. During the course of my research for the book, I had to ask the question because of this. They both know one of my two family sources. And they both know nothing was alleged in the book and I've never said anything to the effect in interviews. My opinion on what may or may not have happened doesn't matter. I did my job as a journalist. Maggie did, too. And I can tell you, neither one of us liked that part of the job.

Further, Fred lies to Erinn a couple times. I think astute readers will pick up on this, especially his version of when and how he spoke to investigators.

All this said, Erinn really did a good job. She got Fred talking directly, unedited, something we've never had. And Fred spills some secrets, finally - especially about the nature of the party at Sara Alfieri's dorm. After nearly 14 years, some basic answers are coming to light. We wouldn't have that without Erinn.

I asked my wife for her advice on this situation (a habit I'm trying to get into before making any important decision). I wanted to file suit for libel. I had a good case, especially after some off-the-cuff remarks Erinn made on Facebook. But Julie asked what I hoped to get out of that. Some kind of vindication? That seems pretty unimportant. And self-serving.

The obsessive part of the community around this case has fractured into different sects, like a religion, and the "Renner-hating" crowd views everything I write through a bizarro lens, discounting every new tidbit because of its author. I don't want to do the same thing with Erinn's contribution. I mean, I want to. I really really want to. But I'm trying to be better.

So I'm sharing this interview that disparages me because it also reveals some very important information about the case and I think sharing it might get us closer to a resolution. Erinn got some good info here and it's not being heard (at the time of this post, it has just over three hundred clicks). I know by posting this, it will be heard.

In my book, True Crime Addict, I begin by taking a psychiatric test that basically tells me I scored the way a sociopath would. It was like a cloud over the rest of my adventures. Some of my readers picked up on something I failed to catch, because I was so close to it. They realized there was another explanation for the way the test came out - that I'm on the autism spectrum, like my son. What would have been called Asperger's at one point. They were right. At 39, I'm finally realizing why my brain works like it does. It's why I'm obsessive about things. Why I can be abrasive when asking simple questions. Why loud noises are like pins in my ears and why I liked piling quilts on top of me as a kid.

Maybe it was something I said, or the way I said it, that poisoned some of the relationships I had during the course of looking into Maura's disappearance. Probably it was.

I guess my point is, as a reader, it's up to you to filter out all the petty, personal animosity that makes so much noise around this case - and focus on the facts. There are some new facts here. And for that, Erinn did okay.

Guest Post: A Closer Look at Maura's Cell Phone Records

A search last month of Maura Murray's final cell phone calls revealed two separate calls to the home of a woman who investigated child abuse claims in the Weymouth area. The woman still lives there, and though she doesn't remember Maura, she believes the only reason she would have called their home is related to one of her investigations. She sometimes gave her personal number to children. She was no longer a social worker in 2004, but was actively investigating cases in the neighborhood when Maura was a teenager.

In light of this I wanted to take a fresh look at the rest of Maura's calls in the weeks leading to her disappearance. I asked a frequent reader - one of the "Irregulars" - to research and backtrack every number. She prefers to go by Mara S. Walker. Here are her findings:

mBreakdown:  Maura’s Cell Phone Records:

First and foremost, thank you to James, as well as such an incredibly loyal following for allowing me to step in and guest blog. Helping to solve this case and provide answers for the Murray family has always been my goal, and using my talents in research and a background in forensics makes me fortunate to be able to hopefully contribute to finding Maura and bringing her home.

Lucky for me, I was able to obtain the phone numbers, through legal means, of each close family member and confidante relevant to the case/in Maura’s life. Going through the pages, able to eliminate the contact info of those closest to her, I was able to list numbers and check each individually for any usable trace information. I will not spend time here listing each individual call, but rather the anomalies I found while background checking the flagged calls that stood out.  Please note; if particular calls are not mentioned, it is because they are correctly identified as far as I could confirm, and, thus, require no further discussion on my end.

Call #11 is tied to a name in Plymouth Ma - Alexander McDonald.  It is a Verizon dedicated New England number, and this is good news as this carrier tends to keep cell records for many many years, (which I know from personal experience).  Said individual listed on multiple sites, apparently has a record with local police based in Manomet, MA (which is in the area of Plymouth) for somewhat odd behavior. Now, if this person has been in possession of this number since the time frame of Maura’s disappearance, it would be interesting to find out why this individual was called by her and what he remembers regarding any communication with her.

Call #82 is based in Holyoke, Ma which is in the western part of the state above Chicopee just below Amherst MA, where UMASS is located. A search on FB confirmed there was a person listed from Holyoke matching the name noted on the bill, Ryan O’Donnell. He appears, if I am looking at the correct person, to be of similar age to Maura, and by his profile picture, also enjoys outdoor recreation such as skiing which is relevant when you think about how many ski resorts were in the area where Maura crashed, as well as around where she was allegedly headed, by her family and the police.

Those were the two major red flag items for me, as the others all appear to be relatively “normal” both for her calling patterns as well as when you think about who was in her life at that time that we are aware of. Example, there is #142, which is a Ft. Sill number and makes sense when you know Bill, her boyfriend worked for them. Also, toward the end of her bill it appears there are a few calls on the day she disappeared that have numbers outgoing to UMASS student voice mails. I would then assume she was calling the friend who’s scrubs she ended up dropping off before leaving.

I can not tell anyone what to derive from these records, or from my information, all I hope to do by pointing out these odd interactions is maybe jogging someones memory regarding relationships even of the casual nature in her life, that may lead to opening more doors toward an answer, and closing more behind us always moving forward.

Friday marks the 14th anniversary of Maura Murray's disappearance and she still remains unfound. At 7 p.m., on the Missing Maura Murray Facebook page, Julie Murray will talk a little bit about Maura and the case and share some memories of her sister. Tune in if you can.

So, after all this time, where are we?

Well, this case is a mess, and it needn't be. But at the moment, there's this conspiratorial mood that has settled in around the case - people suspect the police were involved, people suspect the A-frame house has something to do with it, people suspect a random dirtbag picked her up. Some, including her own family, believe Maura's sister Kathleen or her husband had someone to do with it.

I don't think Kathleen and Tim had anything to do with what happened to Maura. And if anyone is going to talk to Kathleen, I think the more helpful questions would be - Why are you self-medicating? Why are you estranged with your father? What help do you need?

This case, when it's done, is going to be elegantly simple.

The only explanation that makes sense with the evidence we have is that Maura was not traveling alone that night. She was traveling with a tandem driver.

Her friends from UMass have never been forthcoming with police, and even Fred Murray acknowledges that Kate Markopoulos and Sara Alfieri know more than they're sharing.

Remember - Maura bought more booze than one person needed; she was inquiring about places that had multiple bedrooms; she turned down a ride; she disappeared in less than a blink of the eye; she gave up calling condos and motels without reserving a room (because her traveling companion did it before she did). She didn't tell anyone where she was going (c'mon). Anyone who doesn't buy the tandem driver theory has to explain all of that away.

I also believe the Butson's sightings, where Maura was seen buying more booze with two young women before the accident. The Oxygen series, and others, have suggested this can't be, because the police didn't see her on the videotape. But they never bothered to do enough research to discover that the only video cameras in Butson's at that time were pointed only at the bank kiosk, not the registers.

There's a lot of stuff like that that has been spun to others' agendas. When you read those things, please consider what a simpler explanation might be.

What we know now is that Maura's boyfriend, Bill Rausch, has been accused by a number of women of sex assault, physical assault, and harassment. And after he arrived in New Hampshire to join the search for Maura Murray, he kept making dozens of calls every day, until the weekend after the disappearance. Then, he went completely silent for 5 days. None of that sits well with me.

If Maura was traveling in tandem, nobody's alibis for the night of the disappearance matter anymore - because she likely made it to a cabin or wherever she was heading.

I want to believe Maura is out there, alive, and happy. I hope she is. But the likely answer is that she is no longer alive. And I believe that if she is dead, she was murdered by someone she knew.

Don't look to rogue cops or weird stains in abandoned houses or fortuitous kidnappers. Look closer to Maura.

John Smith has been the liaison between Fred Murray and the world for the last few years and claims to be working as a private investigator for the family - he actively posts on the Facebook page that is run and edited by Julie Murray.

Smith claims that police collected DNA from Kathleen Murray last week to compare to evidence found inside Maura's wrecked vehicle. He also claims New Hampshire State Police visited so-called "Witness A". Here's his post from Reddit:

Just a few days after Karen McNamara did her interview on the podcast with Tim and Lance she was approached by two people from the NH State Police.... Those two people were Chuck West and Mike kokoski.

Their mission when speaking with Karen was to tell her that she was wrong she could not have seen what she think she saw and the accusations that she was making against the police were a very serious crime.

Karen was not making any accusations merely stating what she had witnessed..!

Last week Kathleen Murray was visited by the same 2 New Hampshire state policemen. Sergeant Kokoski is the head of the Cold Case unit and Chuck west is retired.

When speaking with Kathleen they told her not to pay attention to any of the conspiracy theories that were being tossed around because they knew that her sister was depressed and had come up here to commit suicide.

They also asked Kathleen for a sample of her DNA. They explained that this sample was for comparison to the things that were found in the Saturn on February 9th 2004.

WTF....... First of all they did not have a warrant for her DNA although she did give them a sample anyway.

For the record, again, I do not believe in any police conspiracy. I think it's completely bonkers to suggest police have anything to do with it.

But if it's true they collected DNA from Kathleen, that is very interesting information. Kathleen was married to Tim Carpenter at the time, and talked to Maura the night Maura had a breakdown at work. She has had several run-ins with the law.

In 2004, Bill was "about to" get engaged to Maura Murray when she disappeared. She's still missing. On February 9th, Julie and Kurt Murray held a public vigil. This is Bill's tweet on the 14th anniversary of his girlfriend's disappearance, by a man who now has political clout and influence to further the investigation if he wanted to.

Can Anyone Tell Me Why Fred Murray Likes Bill Rausch?

Seriously, I can't wrap my head around it. Maura is missing and her boyfriend is in trouble for alleged sexual assault and harassment. He is alleged to have choked a woman and said, "I'm going to kill you like I killed Maura." He lost two jobs because of these allegations. He cheated on Maura. One of the last things she did was to leave an email from Bill on top of the boxes she packed up in her dorm room in which he talks about cheating on her.

But Fred Murray says Bill is good people and "the salt of the earth."

In his latest interview, he names everyone he knows up in Haverhill as a suspect - the police, the brothers from Loon Mountain, the guy around the corner, the tow truck driver is in on it, etc.

But Bill, the only one we know of who has a history of violence against women, is good people.

Request for Interview - Maura's Last Hookup

A couple months ago, it was finally confirmed that a lot more happened at the party in Sara Alfieri's dorm room - two nights before Maura's disappearance - than was previously admitted. Fred Murray says his daughter "hooked up" with a "cousin" of Sara's that night. Sara claims she was sleeping during the party in her room and Kate Markopoulos, who was also there, has never been cooperative with police or reporters when asked about it.

It would be helpful to get their version of events for that evening.

I would love to speak with this man. And also Sara's roommate, Heather Hammond, who has never spoken publicly about the party.

If you have any information about the identity of this man, feel free to send an anonymous message via Globaleaks here.

The voices sound like Charlie from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but this is the best breakdown so far of Bill Rausch's actions following Maura's disappearance. The biggest takeaway is the claim that you could not leave a voicemail longer than 90 seconds in 2004. Which has major implications for that 3 - 4 minute phone call Bill made to Maura's phone before he went silent for 5 days.

Fred Murray's Odd Behavior Caused One Organization to Rescind $75,000 Reward

In 2006, the non-profit organization Let's Bring Them Home, was contacted by members of Maura Murray's family and immediately put up a $75,000 reward for information that would bring closure to the case. The offer made headlines but the reward was quietly rescinded later and a member of the organization contacted me this week to explain why.

She says Fred Murray's behavior and Helena Dwyer-Murray's secrecy raised red flags.

Fred was difficult.  Often hostile.  Very controlling.  I did
everything he told me to do and that was the extent of the
relationship.  He would only talk to me when he felt like and IF he
felt like and then he abruptly cut off all communication once the law
suit was filed to obtain police records.  I was fine with that -- I
found him to be difficult and at the time I was helping dozens of
other families like his.

Helena was nice enough but she held back information.  It was strange.
I never felt like I was getting the full story.  They were all
secretive.  It frustrated me because I did a lot of interviews for
them back then about the reward and Maura's case.

I backed out of the case slowly.... and have never spoken to anyone
again about it until I emailed you.
I asked her what she thought Helena was holding back. Here's her reply.

She wouldn't answer direct questions unless it was on the phone . She
wasn't going to do it in writing. And even then she hedged a lot.  At
the time, I was trying to understand Maura's mental state of mind.
We were, after all, offering a very large reward for information in
the case.

I ended up pulling the reward about 3 months later.  I wasn't trying
to be ugly to the family but there were too many demands put upon our
organization by the Murray family.

A screen shot of one of Fred's emails to the organization is above.

Another thing she found weird were the hang-up calls the tip line sometimes received. Each hang-up was logged and the phone number traced. It went to a phone listed under Julie Murray's name.

Phone Records Suggest Bill Rausch Knew Maura Left UMass on the 9th

I must have looked through Bill and Maura's cell phone bills a hundred times but yesterday a Redditor noticed something I never saw. Here's what "Ashthered" had to say:
After having a look at Bills phone records, I noticed something which seems strange to me, although I'm not sure if what I have noticed is accurate and so would appreciate it if someone with more knowledge could correct me if I'm wrong, sorry if this gets confusing but bare with me...
On Feb 8th at 2:49pm Bill makes a 2 min call to Maura which I presume was him leaving Maura a message as her phone was off at the time, then 1 minute later he calls another Amherst number 413-546-????, i am presuming this is Maura's dorm room (could be wrong but makes sense).
Then on the same day at 4:47 and 5:45 he calls Mauras mobile again which both go unanswered and then his next call is to that same number again which surely is Maura's dorm. It would make sense to try Maura's mobile, if she doesn't answer, then try her dorm.
So if I am correct then Bill on the day before Maura disappears, twice tries to contact her at her dorm after she has failed to answer her mobile.
Then on the Feb 9th, after Maura's last ever call to Bill at 2:18pm, where they don't actually talk but Maura may have left a short message, Bill calls Maura another 8 times before around 5pm on the 10th which would roughly be when Bill was told she was missing, and not once does he try her on her dorm phone, this surely suggests that he must know she is not at Umass, otherwise surely he would have tried her dorm phone again, just like he did on the 8th, twice.
Maybe I have got this wrong and if so I will be very grateful if somebody could correct me, but if not then I'm sure this looks like Bill knew she was going somewhere, before everyone else did?
Bill doesn't like to be ignored. On Feb 8th and 9th, he's calling Maura's cell phone and dorm, trying to get her to talk to him. When he can't reach her, he calls Kate Markopoulos on her cell phone and also Kate's dorm room. But Maura doesn't want to talk and sends him an email text saying so. That doesn't work for him though so he calls Maura's cell again three times in three minutes. But she doesn't pick up.

By all accounts, Bill is acting manic on February 9, as Maura is ignoring him.  He makes a total of 52 calls that day from his cell phone while he's in the field at Fort Sill and after. Calls to ex-girlfriends, mentors from West Point, and family. He's reaching out.

Later that night, he tries to get Maura to talk to him again. But he doesn't try her dorm again. When he can't reach her in the morning, does he try her dorm room? Nope. It's a break in character for him - when she didn't answer on Sunday, he's trying her cell, her dorm, her friend's dorm, and her friend's cell phone. But on Tuesday, he doesn't try Maura on her dorm, even though by all accounts he doesn't learn that she's missing from UMass until around 5 p.m. that evening, when the Murray family calls him.

In fact, after the Murrays call him to say Maura's missing, he doesn't call her cell phone either. He doesn't try to call her, even though she's missing, for two hours. His first thought isn't to immediately try to get his girlfriend to pick up but to call the operator, inquiring about hotels in New Hampshire.

This makes no sense to me. Does it make any sense to you?

In light of allegations against Bill Rausch by multiple women of sex assault and harassment in D.C., I think everyone close to the investigation should sit down and go over timelines of the days following Maura's disappearance.

A New Theory

$
0
0
Over the last few days I've been contacted by a couple sources close to people involved in Maura's life in 2004, and these conversations are prompting me to consider a new theory:

In this scenario, the tandem driver delivers Maura to her safe place (a cabin, the Outing Club place, a hotel), after the crash on 112, then they return to their place, leaving her alone. Later in the week, she is found at this location by someone she knew and killed.

This would go a ways to explaining why the tandem driver is not coming forward (they honestly don't know what happened to her, and are staying quiet to protect her) but also why Maura has not been found (because she was murdered days after her disappearance far from 112).

It's admittedly a weird, messed-up scenario. But whatever answer we get will likely be equally strange.

I'm not sold on this but I'm considering it a possibility.

And if the first part of this rings true, I would ask again that the tandem driver/s come forward and give Maura's destination, because the possibility that she's alive after all of that is quite remote.

Guest Blog - Bill Rausch the Magician

The following is a guest blog by an Irregular who has reviewed the complete phone records of Bill Rausch in Feb 2004:

Upon breaking down the roaming records given to me in full which display Bill Rausch’s roaming path in the days surrounding Maura’s disappearance. Being a native New Englander, I had major red flags upon my first look over these pages, and now I can 100% say with googlemaps to support me, as well as knowledge from locals and other reliable sources that his roaming pattern ranges from
the “its a close call” to “no way in hell unless he is actually magic” can that trail be possible.

According to official cell records, he began pinging as roaming on 2/11, in Rutland, VT which isn't odd at first when you consider there is no record as to where he landed (although he flew out of Dallas - Fort Worth between 5-7 AM according to the American Red Cross call that was stated on record by his mother as coming in while he passed through security) and its considerably after his flight and other added factors. What’s odd? That this location where he is documented is over an hour and a half away from where she went missing and where the searching was based at the time. He could have flown into a military airport in VT perhaps I suppose, but that would be inconvenient and odd as Dallas Ft Worth does fly closer (but by all accounts not to Logan direct).

The real red flag is 2/12, when he is documented as being first in Lebanon NH at 10:26, when he calls Kate Markopolous’s Umass dorm phone (this I am taking via documentation by a prior investigator as old Umass room numbers cant be confirmed this long after the fact) his own VM at 11:06, and a 3 minute unidentified incoming call at 12:17 appears showing his final correspondence at that time. He reappears at 3:24 PM in Streaked Mountain Maine, a one mile round trip trail noted as being quite hard and beginning in Paris, Maine ending in Buckfield, Maine. For this purpose I recorded and checked into both routes and possibilities to see if he could indeed get such a far distance in the time space unaccounted for. Since it is also such a remote and random location, It wouldn't be crazy to think the call at 12:17 may have sent him there. That’s beside the point. Its close, as the map shows:
I also did Lebanon NH to Buckfield ME where the trail ends, as you can apparently park at both:

12:17-3:24 is around 3 hours 7 minutes? So, although close its possible. I will tell you what is downright impossible without secret magical abilities though: getting from Paris or Buckfield Maine (last known 3:24 PM) to Concord NH by 4:10.

3:24 to 4:10 is 46 minutes- that’s not even in the realm of possibility. Nevermind the fact that we didn’t yet account for being in Paris/Buckfield to do whatever or on the trail (even at one mile long, strenuous look for more info at www.mainebyfoot.com) he stays in Concord making calls at 4:12 and 4:19 which are the last of his documented trail in that location. The first two calls which place him in Concord are incoming, one for 3 minutes, one for 6 minutes, and the last call is to Waltham, Massachusetts, a call which I could only attain the information related as being a mobile number under AT&T which I think may have been another carrier, (possibly Cingular) at the time? He returned from Concord NH at 4:19 PM to Lebanon NH at 4:41, with 3 calls one minute apart to a man living in Littleton NH.

I will not post his bio pic or full cell number in respect for his privacy, but interesting- no? He also calls him at 4:51, after calling an unidentified person in Denver CO.
Also worth noting for magical purposes?

Yeah, rarely can you get away with speeding ANYWHERE in this Godforsaken state whether the cops or the super slow drivers stop you, 22 minutes down from 55? Without lights, (did I mention drivers out here at Methuselah speed?) major potholes and very few shortcuts in most major areas, that isn't just a stretch- that is not even close to doable- TRUST ME. I am married to a first responder, and she confirmed in an emergency even with the better routes we have all these years later with sirens on etc- NO WAY. Just no.

His last correspondence that day is with two incoming calls at 5:04 PM (for 8 mins) and 5:25 (3 mins) back in Lebanon as well.

On 2/13, he goes from Rutland VT (ping at 10:31 A calling presumably base in Lawton OK) to Burlington VT at 10:43 AM. 12 mins, same small state right? NO NO.

So, yeah- how did that happen? DID I MENTION HE ISNT AT ALL FAMILIAR WITH NEW ENGLAND WHATSOEVER!? In several pieces of documentation dating way back he is even noted as being with only his own dad “chasing down leads” as they were coming in- so not like he hired a driver or something.

On 2/15, he pings in Concord NH at 4:05 PM calling his own VM, and then manages to get a ping documented in Lebanon NH at 4:52 and 4:53 PM, which we already discussed would have been somewhat close, but a little too close all things considered.

Lastly, we have no idea what’s up 2/14 since he had NO CALLS AT ALL RECORDED- another oddity for a man averaging anywhere from 50-80 calls a day. We saw the pings above 2/15, one for one minute and one for 3 minutes to Maura’s cell number (and if research is correct, a one minute VM was max back then- meaning someone picked up Maura’s phone for that 3 minute call beginning at 4:53 PM

Furthermore, as noted by Mr. Renner previously, we see radio silence, while he was still in New England, still searching with the family, also on 2/16-2/18, calling his own VM at 1:45 PM (call # 508) on 2/19. Hmm, if that isn’t out of character what is?

Do what you want with this information, I can’t tell you what to conclude, I can only present and give leeway where it makes sense (unless anyone wishes to add in other mitigating factors for consideration) and be straight up and call it magic as someone who was born and raised here, residing here now. I doubt you’ll find any of this normal where I have presented otherwise. Looking forward to the input, thank you all for your time and effort- together everyone knows something that will bring Maura home.

EDITOR'S NOTE: It's possible that some of the discrepancies here have to do with extended reach of cell towers. I wouldn't begin to know how one could manipulate ping data with a cell phone in the field. Unlike Bill Rausch, I didn't study GPS technology in college.

UPDATE: Bob McDonald provides further alibi for Bill Rausch

After some questions arose about Bill's whereabouts in the days following Maura Murray's disappearance (based on cell phone roaming charges), I heard from one of his West Point professors, Bob McDonald.

Here's what McDonald says:
I was with him for all that time. My wife and I arrived late Friday and checked into the Wells River Motel, which is where everyone was staying. If my memory is correct (not a 100% certainty given that 14 years have passed) my wife drove home on Monday (it was a three day weekend) but I was able to get colleagues to cover my classes and didn't head home until -- I think -- Wednesday. That last day Bill and I drove to UMass and met with campus police; afterwards he drove me to Springfield (or maybe it was Worcester), where I rented a car and drove home.
Bill basically didn't leave my side. While my wife was with me, he slept in his parents' room. After my wife left, he moved over to mine. There were times when he'd go to the motel office to do phone interviews with Greta Van Susteren, etc., but other than that I don't remember us being apart. I wish I had a better memory of NH and VT geography and place names. The first day or two I was there (Saturday and maybe Sunday) we searched in the general vicinity of the crash site. We visited the tourist town near Mt. Washington and also went to a few other towns both in the direction in which she was traveling (into NH) but also in the opposite direction (toward VT) since, if she got picked up, we weren't sure in which direction the car was traveling. We were posting fliers, talking to people in convenience stores and food markets, and trying to get her picture and police contact info out there. We went to UMass on my last night up there to meet with campus police and also to get me a car rental so I could drive myself home. I hated to leave. Bill stayed up there for a while longer.

As the days passed the focus shifted from searching near the site of Maura's crash and talking to people who lived nearby to trying to do everything possible (distributing fliers, speaking to the media) to raising awareness that she was missing and getting her photo out there in the hope that someone had seen her.

I'm not 100% sure how to explain the 4-minute call. Maybe he was trying to access her voicemail (I think I remember her voice mail being something all of us discussed, but can't remember if we had access to it right away, later, or ever), or maybe he was just leaving a long message in hopes that she would get it. I'm guessing that the period in which he didn't use his cell is explained by the fact that coverage up there was so lousy back then. He was using the hotel phone to speak with media and others in the evenings and during the daytime we were either searching or driving around passing out and posting fliers

If There Was a Tandem Driver, Nobody Has an Alibi

The only thing I'm sure of, in my heart of hearts, is that Maura was traveling with a tandem driver the night she disappeared.

Lately, though, I've started to wonder if the goal that week really was to just get away for a while to clear her head. Have some drinks, regroup.

Perhaps the tandem driver had to get back to school, leaving Maura alone (without a car) until later in the week, at the Outing Club Cabin or some nearby retreat. But when they came back, Maura was gone. And the tandem driver has never come forward because there remains the possibility that Maura left on her own and doesn't want to be found.

Whatever the case, I really hope she made it out, and that she is alive someplace.

But...

What if someone else found Maura before the police did? What if someone found her and was so overcome with rage they did something to her? They would have an alibi for the disappearance but not what happened to her next.

I think police should take a close look at the days immediately after the disappearance, at least until Friday that week. Where exactly was everyone during the search for Maura in the White Mountains that week?

Perhaps Maura is dead. But maybe we were way wrong about the location and timing of it all.

If there was a tandem driver they should come forward with what they know, unless they know without a doubt that Maura is safe (which is looking increasingly unlikely).

This Blog Will Close in May

I had an idea as a reporter way back in 2005, that I might be able to use the Internet to crowdsource investigations into cold cases. After my first book, a look at the 1989 unsolved murder of Amy Mihaljevic, I started a blog devoted to her case. It produced a mountain of new clues but ultimately it did not bring closure to that case. In 2011, when I began looking into the bizarre disappearance of Maura Murray, I started this blog to generate new leads. It worked a little better than expected. To date, this site has received over 7 million visitors.

My hope was that these blogs and their comment sections could serve as an online Writers Room where people could openly discuss every aspect of these cold cases - clues, suspects, evidence. I thought that readers would be able to separate the blogs from traditional journalism. I thought they'd be able to read these thoughts and ideas and not prescribe guilt or innocence to specific people (the way reporters do in a traditional writers room). But as George Carlin once said, consider how stupid the average person is and then realize half of them are stupider than that. Real news sites sometimes took the names debated on these blogs and reported them as if they held as much meaning as an officially named suspect. Readers assumed that if a name was mentioned, they must be guilty.

This blog will cease to exist in May. I'm ending it now for a couple reasons. I feel I've taken my reporting on this case as far as it will go. I feel Kate Markopoulos and Bill Rausch know more than they've said. Their phone calls to each other in the days leading up to and following the disappearance speak volumes. I believe Fred Murray knows more than he's said and I will always suspect the $4,000 he took out from several ATMs the weekend before the disappearance does not pass the smell test. Neither does what I found at his house. But unless they share what they know, I don't believe we'll ever know what Maura was doing in New Hampshire that night or where she was going.

I believe the women who have come forward accusing Bill Rausch of sex assault and harassment. And I can say the police are aware of their stories, too. My hunch is that Maura was killed later in the week in New Hampshire, not near the site of the accident. But I really do hope she managed to get away.

Mostly, I don't have the stomach for this anymore. The meanness and lack of empathy in the comments section and in emails are unrelenting. People are mean when they can be anonymous. Mean to sources, mean to victims, mean to writers. Also, heartfelt conversations with other writers, most notably Jon Ronson and Kathryn Schulz, have caused me to reconsider the value - or lack thereof - of discussing these cases so publicly with an active audience/pitchfork brigade.

There are people who now define their lives by their obsession with Maura Murray. I don't intend to be like them. I have other stories I'd like to get to.

I still have some things to say regarding true crime and will do so in a new podcast soon - The Philosophy of Crime. I hope you tune in.

For those still interested in research, I will archive this blog and add it to my collection of material at the Special Collections Archive at the Kent State library, where anyone can read and review it in the future.

I hope this all meant something. We'll see.
