What You Need to Know to Catch Up On the Maura Murray Mystery

Thanks to the Oxygen series, a new wave of people are learning about the strange disappearance of Maura Murray. Beyond the basics anyone can find on the wiki pages, what else do you need to know?

I spent several years trying to find out what happened to Maura for my book, True Crime Addict, and here are some pieces of the puzzle I uncovered along the way:

- At the time of her disappearance, Maura was on probation for credit card fraud, having been caught stealing credit card numbers to order pizza in the dorms at UMass.

- There is no significance to the strange message Bill Rausch got on his cell phone - which he said was Maura whimpering. Police tracked down and interviewed the person who made that call. It was a Red Cross worker trying to reach him.

- Maura and Bill were not engaged at the time of her disappearance. Billy had cheated on her. And Maura was having an affair with a UMass track coach named Hossein Baghdadi.

- Hossein Baghdadi was also linked to the UMass Outing Club cabin, which may have been Maura's destination the night she vanished.

- Bill Rausch lost his job in D.C. after a woman claimed he sexually assaulted her in the office of the president of Ray Group International, in 2011. He says he was in Fort Sill at the time of the disappearance and offered to have two people contact me to verify his alibi. They never returned calls.

- There were two women who were with Maura at UMass prior to her disappearance - Kate Markopoulos and Sara Alfieri. Both have refused repeatedly to speak to journalists and have been uncooperative with police, especially about events at a party two days before Maura vanished, which allegedly occurred at Sara's dorm.

- Fred refused to be interviewed by state-police homicide detectives for 2 years and when he did, he brought 2 lawyers with him.

- Fred has told Maura's friends to not talk to the author of the book on her disappearance.

- A search warrant suggests someone called Maura's phone from New Hampshire the day she disappeared.

- On the 8th anniversary of Maura's disappearance, a mentally disturbed man released a series of videos on YouTube taunting authorities and suggesting he has inside info about what happened to the young woman.

- A man named Petrit Vasi was struck by a vehicle at UMass the night Maura had a breakdown at work. People have suggested she may have been driving the car. The official reports from the accident suggest she was not.

- A woman (commonly referred to as "Witness A") claims she saw a Haverhill police vehicle acting suspiciously the night of Maura's disappearance. This is used as the basis of a popular police conspiracy angle. I believe the vehicle she saw was simply a police car that responded to the scene. In my opinion it only distracts from the case and muddies the waters. She and the people who pushed this theory into the spotlight lost loved ones to police negligence or accidents. As such, there's an understandable desire by the parties to suspect the police. I've spoken to the police who were there that night, including Chief Williams and Trooper Monaghan and don't believe there's any conspiracy here. In fact, the police did everything they could to find Maura. It was clear she didn't want to be found.

- Bill Rausch's phone records raise more questions than answers.

- There have been several sightings over the years, mostly concentrated in Quebec.

- There's a popular podcast, Missing Maura Murray, and an official subReddit as well.

- My files on the Maura Murray case can be viewed by the public at Kent State University.

Chance Encounter Provides Possible Explanation for Maura Murray's Disappearance

As an old-school shoe-leather reporter, there's nothing I love more than a good bar story. This one has all the hallmarks of a legit run-in with someone from Maura's inner circle - and they provide an explanation that took me years to bring myself to.

There's also enough identifying info here, that I'm confident a websleuth with a little time can track this down.

Here it is:

I went to college at Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass, class of **. In
the fall of 2004 (it was football season), I was in a bar called
Moynihans on Main Street, close to the campus of Clark University. It
was a Saturday afternoon because college football was on TV. The bar
was half empty, and I started up a conversation with this guy who told
me he was a grad student at Clark. He told me he had recently
graduated UMASS.

An Army football game highlight or score came on the TV, and I stopped
the conversation to watch. The guy asks me why and I explain its
because my dad graduated West Point and we always went to games when I
was a kid, and I still rooted for the team. He then started talking to
me about the missing girl who had gone to West Point and then to
UMASS. I hadn't heard about it at the time and he explained to me what
I now know is the MM case. He told me that it was an open secret among
people who knew her personally at UMASS that she ran off on her own to
get away from an abusive relationship. He said that he knew people
that knew her and that had been in on the whole thing, and that people
freaked out once the police and newspapers and media had picked up on
the story. I remember thinking at the time that it was an interesting
story, but that she'd eventually be found out. When I got back to my
dorm later that day, I looked it up online and read a newspaper
article or two, but then totally forgot about the whole thing until I
started reading your blog and the wikipedia on MM.

I know my story doesn't prove anything, but it's interesting that
someone so far back who was personally familiar with MM's circles at
UMASS had been speculating about her running away on her own volition.

Police Collected Kathleen Murray's DNA Last Week Says "Official" Private Investigator Working with Murray Family.

John Smith has been the liaison between Fred Murray and the world for the last few years and claims to be working as a private investigator for the family - he actively posts on the Facebook page that is run and edited by Julie Murray.

Smith claims that police collected DNA from Kathleen Murray last week to compare to evidence found inside Maura's wrecked vehicle. He also claims New Hampshire State Police visited so-called "Witness A". Here's his post from Reddit:

Just a few days after Karen McNamara did her interview on the podcast with Tim and Lance she was approached by two people from the NH State Police.... Those two people were Chuck West and Mike kokoski.

Their mission when speaking with Karen was to tell her that she was wrong she could not have seen what she think she saw and the accusations that she was making against the police were a very serious crime.

Karen was not making any accusations merely stating what she had witnessed..!

Last week Kathleen Murray was visited by the same 2 New Hampshire state policemen. Sergeant Kokoski is the head of the Cold Case unit and Chuck west is retired.

When speaking with Kathleen they told her not to pay attention to any of the conspiracy theories that were being tossed around because they knew that her sister was depressed and had come up here to commit suicide.

They also asked Kathleen for a sample of her DNA. They explained that this sample was for comparison to the things that were found in the Saturn on February 9th 2004.

WTF....... First of all they did not have a warrant for her DNA although she did give them a sample anyway.

For the record, again, I do not believe in any police conspiracy. I think it's completely bonkers to suggest police have anything to do with it.

But if it's true they collected DNA from Kathleen, that is very interesting information. Kathleen was married to Tim Carpenter at the time, and talked to Maura the night Maura had a breakdown at work. She has had several run-ins with the law.

The boys are back with a new episode. This one features audio from their trip to the UMass Outing Club Cabin, which may have been Maura's destination the night she disappeared.

Listen closely. Inside the cabin they discover an interesting clue - another copy of Not Without Peril, the book Maura left behind in her car. One could argue that it is a very popular book in the area around the White Mountains. But as someone whose business is books, I can tell you a book like that did not have a very large print run. It's a very specific local-interest sort of book. And it would not be available in most bookstores, even out there. It's more likely it was available in local hiking-supply stores or White Mountains visitors' centers. To me, that book is evidence of a connection to Maura Murray. As in she ran with the crowd that frequented the cabin back then.

**UPDATE** I stand corrected. Not Without Peril has sold over 70,000 copies. Damn. That's impressive.

A New Chapter Begins

A quick comment before the series begins to air tonight. In 2010 I reached out to Fred Murray and let him know I was planning to write a book about his daughter's disappearance. He wouldn't answer direct calls but he passed a message through his in-law that he didn't want to answer questions. I found that odd, as I had written about a number of unsolved disappearances and murders and the families had always been gracious for coverage. This attitude made more sense when I learned that Maura had gotten in trouble for credit card and identity theft and was about to be kicked out of West Point when she withdrew. This was why Fred didn't want to talk but since that info has come out there's nothing to lose and he's been more forthcoming. There were other things I was told about Fred that made me upset but I chose not to air everyone's dirty laundry. I feel for Julie and Kurt especially. To have to read all the vile comments online must be spiritually trying at times.

This case is going to get a lot of attention again. I put myself out there and expect to take a few hits in this show. At the end of the day though I would love for them to have some closure and if all this happened to get us to that end then I have no regrets.

For the record I believe Maura was traveling in tandem with another driver that night. The other driver then either helped her move on or they are responsible for her murder.

You can read through my investigation of the case at my blog, http://mauramurray.blogspot.com And you can visit the Kent State Special Collections archive if you'd like to see every interview and document I collected and use it to form your own conclusion.

I wish the Murray family luck in finding Maura.

Peace.

This clip from next week's show is very important. Maggie got an interview with "Erin," the nursing student whom Maura returned scrubs to the day she disappeared. Check it out. She says Maura again mentioned a family emergency and something to do with her sister.

Another Woman Comes Forward With Allegations About Bill Rausch's Violent Behavior

If you've seen the trailer for tomorrow's episode of The Disappearance of Maura Murray, there's a clip of me saying I believe Maura ran away from the men in here life. But what was so bad that she'd run away? Was she really that afraid of someone?

At the time of her disappearance, she was dating Bill Rausch. Rausch has a good alibi. He says he was in the field at Fort Sill, where he was stationed - though he was apparently able to make a many many cell phone calls while training newbies.

My first impression of Bill was a very likeable guy. We talked at length on the phone one day and he seemed genuine. But since then, several women have come forward claiming there is another side to him he doesn't show to men.

Around Saint Patrick's Day, 2011, Bill is alleged to have sexually assaulted a coworker in the office of the president of Ray Group International, a D.C. firm. There was an internal investigation and he was never able to return to work in the office. The woman who claims he assaulted her, also claims Bill pushed her down the stairs at a Metro station and pretended it wasn't him.

I have spoken to high school girlfriends - whom he called the day Maura disappeared - and I was told Bill had a reputation even before he met Maura of being rough with women.

Yesterday I was contacted by another women who worked at a bar in D.C. in late 2011. Their relationship, she says, started out consensual but turned scary. Here's some of her story:

Instead of waiting for me he came back to [the bar after hours], knocked on the front door. I unlocked the door and let him in. I told him I was stocking wine, he could wait at the bar, I'd be back in a few minutes. He said he'd "help." I smiled. He followed me down the stairs so I could stock wine. He was behind me, while I walked down the steps carrying a black crate. He stopped me before I got to the bottom of the steps by placing his hands on my shoulders (I was one or two steps below him). He got closer to me, moved his hands to my hips and pressed himself against me. He asked how bad of a person I was.
 - later -
We went into my apartment through a side entrance. I asked him how long he'd been married, he replied 2 years. I asked if he'd ever cheated on his wife, he said no, not since they became husband and wife. This is when he asked how rough he could be. I said I didn't break easily. We proceeded to have sex. The recollection of that night coupled with the woman's description oh how he forced himself upon her against a desk were startling similar. He didn't leave bruises on me, but he held my neck the entire time. He liked the sound I made when I started to gasp for air. There was something unsettling about the look in his eyes at the time. It wasn't pleasure, it was power. When we finished it was like it had never happened. He used the bathroom and got dressed. We went outside to smoke a cigarette. It was probably 2:30-3 am at this point. Cold outside. He looked at me, the same way he had when he had his hands around my neck and said "this never happened, right?"
I've never, ever had a reason to write to a true crime novelist. I reach out now because I've witnessed the same things women claim against Bill. And if cracking the shell of his character is a way to understand the events leading to Maura's disappearance, then I'll help in any way I can.
Rausch declined to respond to this story. Rausch denies he met this woman and the details of this allegation.

Maura had motive to flee, especially if a child was involved. What I don't understand is what happened to her after the accident in Haverhill. Did she continue on to a new life or was she murdered by someone she knew?

Another really good episode of The Disappearance of Maura Murray aired this weekend. There was a bit of new info - an interview with a woman from UMass who was in clinicals with Maura, and a great interview with her sister, Kathleen.

During the course of these interviews, and chatter on social media, it was mentioned that the search on Maura's computers about the effects of drinking on pregnancy might be related to her studies at UMass, her room was never unpacked after break, and the credit card number she stole had been passed around by other people.

These opinions remain unproven. In fact, there were several more numbers found in Maura's dorm room and no evidence anyone else ever used these numbers. Maura's single dorm room was the same as it was the prior semester and she didn't need to pack up between breaks. If Maura's search was related to school work, there are no emails from her to fellow students sharing that info, as suggested, at least none that have been made public, and the lead detective believes Maura was searching for personal reasons.

I'm not saying my opinions about these facts are correct, either. But it's important to remember at this point that nothing has been ruled out.

I will say this - I would love to be proven wrong on any of these points, if only so that we have some definitive answers.

New Episode of Missing Maura Murray is Up!

The Toughest Question

$

Tonight's episode of The Disappearance of Maura Murray poses a very difficult and personal question to Fred Murray - did he have an inappropriate relationship w his daughter?

Nowhere in my book does it say he did.

However, it has been implied on the Internet messageboards - people questioning why he was visiting Maura at Umass, why she was going to his room, etc. I have tried to be diligent on this website about deleting these comments but it was difficult to keep up with that task sometimes (in part, it's why I shut down comments to this site).

When interviewing friends and family members, allegations did come up about his relationship with Kathleen and Maura. As a journalist, it was due diligence to pose these questions to Fred. Since he never responded to messages, I did not include specifics in the book.

There were two sources related to this allegation. The main source is Tim Carpenter, Kathleen's boyfriend at the time of the disappearance. He grew up next to the Murrays and knew the family well. Was he lying? If he was lying, what motive did he have to lie to me - a grudge against his ex-wife? Against Fred, himself? I don't know, which is why I haven't been explicit about this, but tonight's episode causes me to show my hand.

After Kathleen's interview last week, I have taken another hard look at Tim. His daughter says he was in Hanover the night Maura disappeared. What we do know is that he and Kathleen helped Fred pack up Maura's dorm after the disappearance and all that evidence - including her computer - went to Tim's house until the police asked for it years later.

And a few years ago, Tim was arrested and charged with a sex assault - but the charges were later dropped after the witness recanted.

I tried to follow up with Tim last year (and the production probably did, too). I was told Tim suffered a stroke and his brain was damaged, that he doesn't recall much and can't communicate well.

This is dirty laundry and makes me very uncomfortable. This is the stuff best left to police detectives and not internet sleuths. I've talked before about my own grandfather, and how he was serial rapist who preyed on children. I wrote about him, exposed his crimes, in the book and online shortly before he died of cancer. This shit is hard to talk about even when it does happen. And we have no proof this happened, here.

I've said before, there is no happy ending in this case. Either Maura had serious reasons to leave (and she should remain hidden) or someone murdered her. My writing of True Crime Addict was a way for me to show how unhealthy our obsessions can become, and it was the beginning of my journey away from these cases and into a better life.

So, be mad, be sad. Be confused. It's an existential world. I wish there were answers. I hope the Murrays find closure. Peace.

A Fresh Approach

Over the last few days, I've reviewed every post on this website, and have decided to remove about twenty or so. In the last year, I've come to believe that Maura is alive and is staying away to protect herself and a child - though in a world of Ariel Castro's, I can't say I'm 100% sure. Let's say 90%.

The posts I took down relate to more prurient details of her college life. At the time, I thought it worth sharing because some of the people involved were interviewed as potential suspects. I no longer believe they are suspects, so the info is probably not relevant. I've also taken down some unrelated personal details about her friends and family.

I will continue to update with new info about the investigation, of course. And will still consider possible suspects, treating this mystery as a homicide until we know for sure it is not.

Thank you for continuing to visit this blog.

A New Theory

$

0
Over the last few days I've been contacted by a couple sources close to people involved in Maura's life in 2004, and these conversations are prompting me to consider a new theory:

In this scenario, the tandem driver delivers Maura to her safe place (a cabin, the Outing Club place, a hotel), after the crash on 112, then they return to their place, leaving her alone. Later in the week, she is found at this location and either taken or killed.

This would go a ways to explaining why the tandem driver is not coming forward (they honestly don't know what happened to her, and are staying quiet to protect her) but also why Maura has not been found (because she was murdered days after her disappearance far from 112).

It's admittedly a weird, messed-up scenario. But whatever answer we get will likely be equally strange.

I'm not sold on this but I'm considering it a possibility.

And if the first part of this rings true, I would ask again that the tandem driver/s come forward and give Maura's destination, because the possibility that she's alive after all of that is quite remote.

Today, I set up a Globaleaks server and website specifically for sharing evidence and information related to the Maura Murray case.

This is designed for two purposes:

1. For Maura Murray herself to provide proof of life without revealing her location.

2. For anyone with information about the death of Maura Murray to provide evidence or information without fear of being traced.

How it works:

Step One:
Download the Tor browser.

Step Two:
Open Tor and input this address in the address bar:
zzkahkxumybfb7rd.onion

Step Three:
Follow the prompts to submit info.

Step Four:
Copy the 16-digit code so that you can log in later to communicate further.

That's it. Let's have closure.

Fingers crossed.

If There Was a Tandem Driver, Nobody Has an Alibi

$

The only thing I'm sure of, in my heart of hearts, is that Maura was traveling with a tandem driver the night she disappeared.

Lately, though, I've started to wonder if the goal that week really was to just get away for a while to clear her head. Have some drinks, regroup.

Perhaps the tandem driver had to get back to school, leaving Maura alone (without a car) until later in the week, at the Outing Club Cabin or some nearby retreat. But when they came back, Maura was gone. And the tandem driver has never come forward because there remains the possibility that Maura left on her own and doesn't want to be found.

Whatever the case, I really hope she made it out, and that she is alive someplace.

But...

What if someone else found Maura before the police did? What if someone found her and was so overcome with rage they did something to her? They would have an alibi for the disappearance but not what happened to her next.

I think police should take a close look at the days immediately after the disappearance, at least until Friday that week. Where exactly was everyone during the search for Maura in the White Mountains that week?

Perhaps Maura is dead. But maybe we were way wrong about the location and timing of it all.

If there was a tandem driver they should come forward with what they know, unless they know without a doubt that Maura is safe (which is looking increasingly unlikely).
